Do Pirates Take Baths?
Published in School & Library Binding by Albert Whitman & Co (September, 1994)
Authors: Kathy Tucker and Nadine Bernard Westcott
Average review score:

A fun book
I am a mother of two boys ages 3 and 4. We like this book. It has cute pictures and the rhyming is fun. It is a book full of questions and then answers the questions in ryhme. Silly and fun.

Yes, but they don't use soap!
What a great book! My 2 1/2 year old son loves the rhyming text, the fun pictures, and was particularly interested in what pirates dream of! Of course, parents must put on their salty drawl to make the book even more fun, Matey! A great addition to a child's book collection.

Pirates take baths when they smell very bad!
This bright and cheery book about pirates is hilarious. Bright and cheery describes a pirate's life? Yes, as you read how pirates work, if they have pets, and what they dream about plus the answer to many more questions you haven't thought of before. The illustrations are full of life and the rhyming descriptions are a lot of fun. "Do Pirates Have Birthdays? Of course they do--with presents and games and lots of soda pop. The cook makes a cake with doubloons inside and a skull-and-bones on top." Of course the cake is bright pink with a happy skull and bones on top. In the background pirates play pin-the-tail-on-the-whale and eat ice cream by the scoopful. Loads of fun!

Birdfeeders, Shelters and Baths (The Weekend Workshop Collection)

birds love these
I bought this for my husband 2 years ago and he has made all the large feeders. He really enjoyed building them and I enjoy showing them off. I'm currently looking for another book with different designs but so far this is the best one.

Birdfeeders Shelters & Baths
An excellent book that illustrates how to make some very nice birdhouses that vary from the easy to the complex like the one on the cover. I'm building the one on the cover and am having a lot of fun! The best birdfeeder book I've seen so far.

Character First: The Hyde School Difference
Published in Paperback by Prima Publishing (November, 1995)
Author: Joseph W. Gauld
Average review score:

Excellent perspective for any parents with teenagers.
Joe Gauld's practical experience and pragmatic system helps parents evaluate their own family's values. The book is a fast read. It engages humor with real life sad examples of families and teenagers who turned their lives around. The school expanded to two campuses, the second in Woodstock, CT.

hyde
Joe Gauld's goal was to reform American education when he founded Hyde School in Bath, ME about 35 years ago. His idea was that only about 12% of students had the aptitude to really succeed in the current system, which emphasized top grades leading to a great college and eventually making a lot of money. The other 88% of students were relegated to second-class status or worse. Furthermore, he believed that success in life was not created by high aptitude and a prestigious job, but rather by character traits that would lead to fulfillment of each person's unique potential. To date, the Hyde schools have expanded to two boarding schools (Bath, ME and Woodstock, CT) and two inner-city public charter schools (New Haven and Washington, DC). It has also spun off teacher training programs and a nationwide parent training program. The parent program is described in a new book by Joe's son and daughter in law (Biggest Job We'll Ever Have : The Hyde School Program for Character-Based Education and Parenting -- Laura Gauld (Editor), Malcolm Gauld; Hardcover, to be published by Scribner's in Feb. 2002.

As a parent of two children at Hyde, I can say from experience that what this book says is what the school actually does. For me, the Hyde experience has revolutionized the way I think about education, parenting, and other related efforts, such as psychotherapy and family counseling. The present, majority system is doing it wrong. Joe Gauld had the vision to see the truth, and he set up a system that does it right.

Clifford's Bathtime

OK
It was kind of cute. I found the Clifford's Noisy Day to be a bit more educational but this is a nice book.

fan of Clifford the Small Red Puppy books
I have purchased 6 of the "Small Red Puppy" board books for my son and we enjoy all of them. My son really likes Clifford's Bathtime because he loves rubber ducks and their are several pictures of them in this book. Speaking of pictures, the artwork in this book is great for toddlers--large, bright pictures of familiar objects which parents and caregivers can use to encourage vocabulary development. This book also contains (on average) about 1 sentence per page. I like that since my son is not yet a patient reader and wants to flip the page sometimes before we are finished reading it. The length of the book is perfect. Not too long for a toddler. There is even a bit of suspense to this story line when Clifford falls off of his bar of soap!

Lastly, I have to comment on the construction of the book. It is great! My son is not exactly gentle with books and the board type of construction withstands his "roughness." The thick pages are also a breeze for him to turn on his own.

Is It Time?

Author: Marilyn Janovitz

Is It Time
The rhyming text has an easy sing song quality. After reading it a few times, the kids can look at the pictures and read it to me. It makes going to bed a pleasant experience.

such affection conveyed in the drawings!
I'm not a dog/canine person but Marilyn's wolf father and cub are draw with such affection, they convey joy and kindness what's not hinted at all in the writing! The illustrations tell their own story, placing this book high on the bedtime-read bed-shelf. The text has just enough repetition to combine the best of a sing-along song without being insulting to the reader. A pure delight!

Sam's Bath
Published in Paperback by Methuen Publishing Ltd (1983)
Authors: Barbro Lindgren and Eva Eriksson
Average review score:

Great Beginning Reader...
My children (4 and 6) loved this book, and all the other books in the series. Simple words, short sentences, short books, and familiar concepts made these books a winner with my family. These are great books for those who still can't read all the way through the Dr. Seuss books yet.

Perfect book for toddlers and adults
The entire series is perfect: jewel-like stories that have drama--catharsis and resolution in just a few pages. This one is excellent, though Sam's Cookie is his most satisfying adventure overall.

I Don't Want to Take a Bath
Published in Hardcover by Little Tiger Pr (September, 1997)
Authors: Julie Sykes and Tim Warnes
Average review score:

Good Clean Fun - with two gripes
This book, while not as good as Ms Sykes' "I don't want to go to sleep," does deliver a good message. I have two gripes: One gripe is that Little Tiger either lives in a zoo or has access to some sort of molecular transporter as he (Tigers are Asian) plays with Lions (African) and Bears (American) all in the span of one evening. The second gripe is Little Tiger eating berries. Okay so this is a childrens book; I'm trying to keep my perspective. Tigers really don't play in the mud with Elephants and Elephants are not read bedtime stories. But I'm wondering if a few years down the road my kid is going to have to un-learn what is written here. Tigers, no matter how cuddly, are carnivorous. And you won't see Lions, Tigers, and Bears together in the wild ever. For folks seeking behavioral or geographical purity, look elsewhere.

A short, clean bedtime read for preschoolers!
This is my four-year-old boy's current favorite book! Since it is rather short, we read it at least twice a night. My son can understand how Little Tiger feels, because sometimes he too, does not want to take a bath. But in the end, everyone ends up clean and happy!

My kids love this book!
I have two young sons who are 3 & 4 years old. Everynight before bedtime, they get to pick out six books for us to read before they get tucked in, and everynight, this book is one they want to hear!

We've gotten into the habit of me pointing at them when it's time and they get to say, "I don't want to take a bath!" And always, at the end of the reading, they tell me that they think it's funny that he doesn't like baths...because they LOVE bathtime! My 4 year old suggests that Little Tiger take a few floaty toys with him to the stream and he'll have even more fun.

Wonderful book! I highly recommend it to all children! Not only is it a great message, but it allows the youngsters to become involved in the story.

No Bath Tonight
Published in Hardcover by Thomas Y. Crowell (November, 1978)
Author: Jane Yolen

Bathes will be had tonight
This is a wonderful book of trickery your child may never notice. In this book a little boy tells of the woes of every little boys life, bumps and bruises with championed stories. However, these injuries impede the progress of his mother and father's wishes to rid him of his odorous battle scars. When grandmother steps in, with her tea leaf reading magic the boy is conned into a bath and the reliving of all of his adventures.

No Bath Tonight
I love this book enough to search for a copy for my new grandson. I read it many times to my son, now 21, and we loved the way this book subtly acknowledges that kids don't always want to submit to to usual adult rules of hygiene. However, coaxed by a loving and knowing grandmother, and following a series of enjoyable activities she and her grandson share while delaying, the bath is eventually taken and its enormity defused.

darling, witty book!
this book - picked up by my mother at a library giveaway sale - has been a huge hit with my 5 yr old. the theme - no bath tonight - really hits home with her - the prose is extremely witty and the pictures are just precious. we highly recommend this wonderful book at our house!

Rub-a-Dub, Pooh
Published in Hardcover by Random House Disney (June, 1999)
Authors: Gus Alavezos, A. A. Winnie the Pooh Milne, and Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld
Average review score:

My daughter loves it, however, Mommy ...
My daughter loves Pooh and loves this book, however she liked it a little too much - she chewed the whole thing apart as soon as she got it. I was a little disappointed by the the size of the book -- I didn't realize that it was only about 4 inches.

Easy to hold
My daughter got this for Christmas. She loves it. Pooh and Roo take a bath and it gets her excited for bath time.

Rhyming text makes bathtime fun
My two and a half year old loves this book so much that she memorized it and loves to "read" it to us. I'm sure that process was easier for her due to the rhyming text. Any child who loves Winnie-the-Pooh will enjoy this little board book, just perfect for little hands to hold. And if your child needs encouragement when it comes to taking baths, this book may help alot, as it tells of Pooh and his friend Roo getting all messy in mud puddles, then of Kanga giving them a bath to get them "warm, dry, and clean at last," and thus all "ready for bed."
